The Golden State Theatre in Monterey, California, opened in 1926 as the largest theatre in between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The Golden State is one of the few in the Tillmany collection that is still open and functioning as a theatre. Like many theatres, after years of decline, the Golden State was purchased by a church group- large, centrally located theatre buildings are often repurposed by religious groups. In recent years, however, the Golden State Theatre has been reopened as a theatre for live performing arts.
