For nearly sixty years THS members have been the guardians of the history of America’s greatest theatres. Today, THS continues to celebrate, document, and promote the architectural, cultural, and social relevance of America’s theatres.
Enhancing Archives and Collections
In October 1, 2016 THS relocated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, partnering with the Smithsonian-affiliated Senator John Heinz History Center to ensure optimal archival care.
Pittsburgh was the birthplace of the stand-alone commercial movie theater in 1905 and our agreement with John Heinz History Center will maximize the success of those using our collections for research.
In tandem with improved access, THS is also prioritizing collections care for its holdings. As stewards of the largest collections of its kind, we must ensure the care and safety of our archive for future generations.
But we can’t do it alone.
The cost to care for a collection the size of our archive is not minimal. The collections in our Archive are constantly at risk by elements as simple as air, moisture and even the very material from which they were created.
